It wasn't until I finished the last session when I realised that I'd had my earphones in all the time I was playing but instead of listening to music I was singing Amerika by Rammstein in my head. I'm not great at singing Rammstein songs because my German is rather rostig.
Anyway, I'd been for a fast training session this morning and it's no secret that exercise helps with poker. I think that it's because of the blood flow being increased, aiding the brain to work better. I've certainly found this myself and when I don't go training I often see the consequences in my game.
It felt like the 97 hands went pretty quickly. I'll recount two.

I won't complain about this one, I was lucky to make the straight on the river. But it seems more like a PLO hand than FLHE. I feel conditioned to almost expect the chop when I make a nut straight, but not used to it.
Anyway, I was on round about $0.40 profit for most of the session. This was pretty much since the start until the following hand.

I half knew and half hoped that SB had a smaller pocket pair. It could have easily been aces. I certainly know that I played it really weakly regardless. I was incredibly lucky that my kings held up on such a board, though in fairness to myself, I find it unlikely that BB and MP+2 had playable hands pre.
I stopped soon after and finished up $0.71 from the 97 hands. Up $0.01 from two days.
I felt there was a gap in the market for a blog about the boring story of a grinder trying to turn a small amount of money ($2.80 to be precise) into a larger one. So here it is.

Variations in variance
I'm unsure.
I'm also down $0.70 from 219 hands.
The 219 started fairly well, I flopped quad 3s, but, although he called me all the way, the other guy only had AJ and I didn't win a whole lot.
Then, variance kicked in again with runner runner flushes and river gutshots and the like. I lost some big pots. Two of my tables broke and I didn't replace them so I was 2-tabling, trying to win back what I could. I was helped by a very kind donation.

Annoyance and clairvoyance
I've let myself go again. This isn't only true for my blog, I also haven't attended any lectures in about 2 weeks. But they're not important. This is.
I'll get straight to catching up. I played a session on the 23rd. It was unremarkable other than the frequency of donks making their ubiquitous calls on the river. In fact, they could have just been really good at reading me because they always split it with me, but they really shouldn't have been calling. Then, however, I made a hero call with bottom pair bottom kicker on a wet board. That was just a brilliant read from an inspirational player.
Up $0.40 from 104 hands.
Then I had a shit one the following day. I started off with aces. I got a walk. This may have been the only hand I won. A lot of the time I was just thrown by players with shit pocket pairs c-betting the random flops that came down. I often made even shittier pairs and thought they had ace high or something from their pre-flop play, and their shitty pairs held up. The reason why I'm saying shit a lot in this paragraph is that it was written a lot in my notes. Basically, the opposition were just shit and devoid of logic. I made one lucky fold that was ultimately irrelevant.

My thoughts are that I really should have called the flop as I was getting 16-1 and there was always the chance of getting a runner-runner boat. Of course that would have been no good. As I say though, it was ultimately irrelevant as I saved only $0.09, losing $2.71 in 220 hands.
As I've done before, I didn't play for a few days.
Today, I did. I thought I'd get a quick one in before Quants, which I intended to attend. It wasn't the poker that stopped me from going. It was single malt whisky. I didn't even have any, I was just thinking about it. Anyway, I made $0.20 from 143 hands.
After missing Quants, I thought I'd play again, and I thought I'd switch to full rings. I'm not really sure why I decided to play 6-max originally. Anyway, it seemed to be a good decision as I could understand people more. They were playing more simply and also more weakly. I'd usually say weaker, but this seems to be appropriate, although it's a marginal situation. The following hand was easy for me to know what was going on. I knew what BTN had and I knew how he'd play it.

I need to exploit the idiots.
I finished up $0.19 from 47 hands. It's not a bad rate really. Over 10 BB/100 hands.
However, I then played another session. I 4-tabled this time. And I ran pretty good, making nut flushes twice in a row. The good thing about these tables is that you get paid off a lot more than the 6-max. From 49 hands, this time I made $0.79, ie. just over 40 BB/100 hands. Obviously these rates are meaningless from such a tiny sample. But it looks good if it's meant to be a low variance game. That would suggest that my average will be somewhere between 10 and 40. I like that.

I have a green face
The face paint hasn't come off yet. And worryingly, I don't remember applying it. I don't remember very much from last night.
Anyway, I've played a nice session to recover. There was a lot of dead money floating around. Not a lot of it was mine, I felt reasonably on top of my game. Here are a couple of hands of some importance.

I thought I'd be nice and balanced and show one hand where I got sucked out on by a nob and another where the same nob's idiocy worked to my favour. He mucked KsQd by the way.
I then found that I was down on only one table, but significantly so. I decided to cool down playing just that table and I managed to get it up from a low of $0.09 to $0.53 before leaving. This hand was a critical one in doing it.

Anyway, I've played a nice session to recover. There was a lot of dead money floating around. Not a lot of it was mine, I felt reasonably on top of my game. Here are a couple of hands of some importance.

Several sessions in several days
I've not played a lot online since the last post. And I've not posted a lot since the last post either.
Here's a summary of the three uneventful sessions I've played, followed by some generic hand histories from the 3rd.
Session 1 (day unknown)
182 hands, $0.55 profit
I had been flopping boats frequently in this session and also turned the nuts on more than one occasion, and then I lost a bit in the last few hands when I was dealt aces, kings, jacks and AKs, all of which lost.
Session 2 (day also unknown)
98 hands, $0.62 profit
I was up on two of the tables but I'd been neglecting the other one, giving it no attention at all. Then I wrote this down and it began to increase and I managed to turn a profit with kings vs jacks, giving me profits on all three.
Session 3 (today)
195 hands, $0.69 profit

Desperation
Two days ago, I was tempted to give up on my quest, despite it being one of the most important quests in poker. Ever.
It felt like a lottery, and it was really. The first session I played that day, people were 4 betting rags and rivering 2 pair against my pocket pairs. That happened several times when I was holding queens. Another thing that kept happening was when people had suited rags preflop, saw one of their suit on the flop and decided to call any number of bets with no pairs and no other draws, then turning a fourth and again calling any number of bets, and of course rivering the flush.
Down $1.04 from 320 hands.
For some reason, I had faith in EV. I played another session later that day. After about 200 hands, I was down at least $2 from 4 tables. I then played two tables for most of the rest of the 501 hand session. I still lost, thanks to the same circumstances as before, and finished down $2.69.
I was pretty distraught.
A couple of hours ago, I thought of the origins of my quest. It was conceived wholly out of desperation, and I was feeling desperate again. I decided to just keep playing in the hope that I'll eventually grow my roll.
I played a short session of 83 hands. I won one big pot with 88, after flopping a set and being called/raised all the way by AT who turned aces. And I finished up a very modest $0.44.
I love logarithmic growth.

Premium bonds
A while ago, when I played the occasional freeroll or micro buy-in tournament, I found that I won in the Premium Bonds whenever I cashed. (For the many Americans reading this, Premium Bonds are government bonds owned by the general public and, instead of paying out interest, the holder is entered into a lottery for each £1 they own.)
Anyway, premiums are often irritating. I was dealt a fair few in the last session, though my winnings came from the marginal hands and the expert plays.
The first time I was dealt kings, I flopped top set and it held for a handsomely sized pot. However, this was very much like a scam-artist hooking a sucker. I was dealt kings the very next hand and it lost to 97o, who flopped 2 pair. (I actually won a $0.02 side pot because the 97 was all in on the flop.) Then the following hand I was dealt queens. This time, they lost to 75, who played bottom pair all the way to the river, which was a 5. And there was no respite. Immediately after this, I was dealt 10s. They lost to JT after making the gutshot straight on the turn.
However, the last premium was as good as the first. I had clicked Sit Out Next Big Blind and would have been dealt out, however, I skipped it thanks to others sitting out and was dealt aces. This time I won a decent pot against someone flopping a pair on a 9 high board.
I was up $0.65 after 144 hands. And for those who are interested, my geometric mean ROI was 101% per table.

Arithmetic vs Geometric Mean
The arithmetic mean is the most widely used, probably because it's the simplest to calculate. It's also the one that's relevant to most numbers that mean the number they're representing. The arithmetic mean of the profits from each of the 8 tables in my last session was $0.035. (You'll notice I'm in profit, just.)
The geometric mean, on the other hand, is more useful for numbers that represent something happening to other numbers, such as ratios (such as %ROI). This session's geometric mean ROI was a pitiful 89.6%, which would represent a loss of $0.083.
Before I reveal how much I actually made today for any of those with smaller brains than mine, I should say that I played two sessions between my last post and this one.
One was 2 days ago. Other than one hand in which I turned a straight flush and managed to win a measly one big bet after this, very little happened. I eventually cashed out after 179 hands up $0.43 because there were very irritating people timing out every hand.
The second was earlier today. Again, very little really happened that I could talk about on this blog without people getting very very bored by it. This isn't supposed to be a boring blog.
Anyway, despite finding that I was rivering a lot of straights with semi-connectors, any hand I made before the river seemed to get sucked out on. I finished 228 hands down $0.37.
Now back to the initial session. Obviously it wasn't the first session (it was in fact the last) as I generally structure my blogs chronologically. I may experiment with mixing things up, making them incomprehensible, some time in the future, but that's not what I've done today. I suppose it is. I opened commenting on the arithmetic and geometric means of my last session, but I haven't described it until now.
Anyway, I decided to play 4 tables. At first, I definitely felt more focused but the main difficulty was that the tables kept breaking. This was a difficulty because I had to replace them whilst playing three other hands. There was only one hand worth mentioning though. I limped from the CO with 45o and flopped the wheel and subsequently managed to get 4 bets on every street from good prediction of the other players, and of course a bit of check-raising.
Despite this focus and expert play, I found that I was doing very well on two tables and very poorly on the other two. I eventually grinded the other tables up a little and finished after 249 hands.
The arithmetic mean would suggest that I was up from the session as I had a positive mean profit. However, the geometric mean suggests that I was down from most tables. Both are true. I finished up $0.28, thanks to one $1.02 profit on one table.
There's no need to thank me for the introductory statistics lesson, it comes as a complimentary gift for reading this incredibly pointless blog.

Congruent triangles are not of any relevance whatsoever
Consistent with my statement from the previous post, I played a longer session than the last one, and won less. It wasn't bad though, and at least I won.
I was helped by flopping A55 with A5 early on. Some guy called/raised me all the way with K5. After a while, I was up $1 on that table so I decided to just play 2 tables as I was down a bit on each.
There was another lucky hand where I raised with 67 and was 3 bet. I decided to call as I was obviously live. I turned the fourflush, which beat his flopped top 2 with AQ.
I finished up $0.71 after 152 hands.

Size matters not
In fact, it does. Well length does. Of poker sessions. For me. Or so it would seem.
Actually, I'm confusing cause with effect. But my shorter sessions tend to show higher win rates, and often higher total profits than the longer ones. I should probably apologise to Mike Caro again, because he probably understands why this is.
Anyway, I played a relatively long session last night. It wasn't as long as the Anna Kournikova farce but long enough. It started as they have done, with me up marginally on 2 and down on 1, but then the down table broke and after reseating I was just hovering around even on all three. Then the tables kept breaking with me unable to get any real grasps on the games.
Once I managed to get into a game, I found myself being counterfeited by the river a lot. One example was where I had a straight with 94 on the turn. I'd just checked the big blind and checked the river so I didn't want to suddenly bet the turn. I thought I'll bet the river and maybe get a caller. Of course the river was a 9, which made a straight on the board. To my credit, I made the fold and another player showed down TJ for the rivered nut straight.
I finished 233 hands down $1.33 and rather unhappy.
I've just played another session though. Not much happened really, but I found myself crushing one table. They just seemed to pay me off when I had it and folded when I didn't and I finished up $1 from the table after about 25 hands.
I was meanwhile down on the third table (up a bit on the second as always) until I was 4bet holding 99. Two others called in between us. The 4 bettor was all in on the 8 high flop and the two callers folded the river. The 4 bettor showed 77. It irritates me how people will 4 bet with these sorts of hands. Small Stakes Hold'em recommends only playing aces through to tens and AKs against a 3 bet and only raising with aces, kings, queens and AKs. Even I'm not that tight (hence I called with 99) but it's just wrong to be 4 betting there. People also 4 bet hands like AJo a lot and even KJ and stuff. I'm not complaining. I'm used to it now. Miller and Sklansky should update their book. Though that would just mean they would sell even more books, which wouldn't be right.
Anyway, I finished up $1.28 after a mere 65 hands.

I hate Anna Kournikova
Not the tennis player. I'm sure she's fine and rarely gets cracked.
I hate AK though. I would say I was dealt it between 15 and 20 times in the 354 hand session I just played. I won with it once. That one time, everyone folded round to my open from UTG, for the first and only time today.
Highlights of the other 14 or so times included at least 3 river fourflushes and more than 2 river gutshot straights.
This was one of the major features of the last session, though another prominent one was the high number of coolers, particularly 2 pair over 2 pair. There was also a hand where I'd check-called all the way with 2nd pair and a flush draw (with K9♥) and I raised the river which was checked to me on the button when I made my flush, to be check-raised by A4♥.
These coolers were on top of the standard suckouts from players who can't fold a single hand pre. It made me think that I was probably not playing at my best if I was playing hands that were easily 2nd best. I certainly noticed that I kept overplaying KT, but naturally stopped this sort of silliness immediately.
I managed to regain a little ground from some well timed bluffs, such as the following risky one.
